How to Tie a Bow Tie

How to Tie a Bow Tie

It’s our belief at The Good South that every Southern gentleman should not only own a bow tie but know how to tie one.  It’s no secret some people are intimidated by the art of tying a bow tie, but it really is a simple task.  If you can tie your shoes, you can tie a bow tie!

Below are the 8 steps to tying a bow tie.  To make things easier, we are illustrating with a Mix + Match bow tie.  We suggest tying in front of a mirror.

Step 1.

Place the bow tie around your neck and under your collar.  The buttons should face outward on the back of your neck and the right piece should be about 1 ½ inches longer than the left piece.

Step 2.

Cross the longer end over the shorter end.

Step 3.

Pass the longer end through the neck hole to make a knot as you would if you were tying your shoe.

Step 4.

Grab the right piece in the center of the bow and pull it towards your left shoulder forming the shape of a bow.

Step 5.

Grab the left side of the bow with your left hand and place the hanging piece over the front of the bow with your right hand.

Step 6.

While pulling down on the hanging piece, fold the bow in half.

Step 7.

Hold the folded bow with your right hand and feed the middle of the hanging piece through the knot behind the folded bow.  Continue to feed the hanging piece through the knot until another bow is formed equal in size to the front bow.

Step 8.

Tighten your bow tie by gently, pulling both folded ends simultaneously.  Adjust and straighten as needed.

Easy as pie.  Now that you know how to tie a bow tie, go check out The Good South bow tie collection and choose the bow tie that was handmade for you right here in the South.
